HHS Weekly Update for Feb 1st - Feb 5th

Weekly Announcements
- This week marks the beginning of our second semester at HHS.  Schedule are available to view in iPass.  If you have a questions about your schedule, please contact your guidance counselor. 

- We will be having class meetings this week for the 11th (Mon), 10th (Tues) & 9th (Wed) grades to discuss the course selection process for next school year.  Students are able to make their course selections for the 2016-17 school year starting Thursday, February 4th - Thursday, February 11th. The AMC math test will be administered on Tuesday morning in the cafe from 7:25 - 9:30am.  Please note we will not be serving breakfast before school on Tuesday morning.  

- beFREE is hosting their winter coffee house next Friday, February 5th, at 7 PM right next door at the newly renovated Hopkinton Center for the Arts. Come on by and check out this beautiful new space and hear some very talented student perform. All HHS students are encouraged to attend, cost of admission is $5. 

- Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Program is a training program that wellness teachers Diane Maillet and Bruce Elliott recently attended and is targeting the violence on women and LGBTQ. The program is quite extensive and we are looking forward to bringing some of the information back to the middle school & high school student population. The link above will take you to program but all staff and students can work hand in hand in preventing the issues facing our students today around assaults and violence. 

Student Spotlight of the Week:
- Congratulations to our 2016 Scholastic Writing Award recipients: Freshman Priya Hegde was awarded two Silver Keys for her poems, "The Paper Girl" and "My Toms" and an Honorable Mention for her Critical Essay, "A Space of Solitude." Senior Jack Rooney was awarded a Silver Key for his memoir, "The Cherry Red Stratocaster Takes Flight." Senior Hailey Wigington was awarded a Silver Key for her memoir, "Love is a House."

- Congratulations to Junior Bella Komodromos, who will be representing Hopkinton High School in the 62nd Massachusetts Music Educators Association Festival Chorus at Symphony Hall, Boston on March 12, 2016. She was selected based on her excellent audition that took place this past Saturday at Shrewsbury High School. Over 1000 students state wide auditioned for these very selective ensembles.

- Congratulations to Junior Isabella Giordano for setting the school record in the 1000 meters (2:56.85) at the MSTCA Elite Meet on January 24th.  Also, congratulations to Senior Michael Cuthbert on setting the school record for the 300m (36.17) at the MSTCA Elite Meet as well.

HHS Weekly Update for Jan 25th - Jan 29th

- The High School will be having Mid-Year Exams next week beginning Tuesday, January 26th and ending Friday, January 29th.  Please see the schedule below:

- Please note that breakfast will be served each morning from 6:45 - 9:30am and a light lunch will be served from 11:15 - 12:00pm in the cafeteria. Also, during exam week, there is no bus service provided at 11:15am, but buses will be available at the regular time (1:50 pm).

- The state mandated health screenings for 9th grade students will be conducted immediately following midterm exams on Tuesday & Wednesday.  Student’s hearing, vision and posture will be screened.  

- 9th grade students whose last name begin with A-K should report to the Athletic Center on Tuesday, January 26th immediately after final exams.

- 9th grade students whose last name begin with L-Z should report to the Athletic Center on Wednesday, January 27th immediately after final exams.

Beat the winter chill at the 3rd Annual HPTA Chili Cook Off on Saturday, January 30th at 6:30pm at St. John’s Church in Hopkinton.  Come warm up with good friends and good food.  Taste a variety of chili and vote on your favorite. Enjoy a BBQ buffet provide by Not Your Average Joe’s with desserts provided by Water Fresh Farm.  A friendly corn hole competition, raffles and a silent auction round out this casual yet fun evening. The chefs will be judged by Troy Mick, Vanessa Bilello (Hopkins Vice Principal), Ellen Scordino (SC Chairwoman), Jeff Dubeau (Worcester Fire Lieutenant and husband of Center School Principal Lauren Dubeau), Anne Carver (Elmwood School Interim Principal) and Larry Knutson (last year's Crowd Favorite winner). Make sure to purchase your tickets online today at hptaonline.com.  Tickets prices increase at the door.

HHS Weekly Update for Jan. 18th - Jan. 22nd

- The Hopkinton Youth Commission presents Martin Luther King, Jr Weekend of Giving Back 2016.  Below are the events and activities of the weekend for those interested:
    -     Saturday, Jan 16: 3:30 - 4:30pm - MLK Song Circle: Hopkinton Arts Center 
- Monday, Jan 18: All events will be held at the Middle School
                    9am - Breakfast: outside Brown Gym/Auditorium

                    9:45 - 10:30am -Dr. Ciaramicoli: How Empathy Helps Stress: MS auditorium

-  High School Librarian Kirsten Fournier and Math teacher Jen Fairbanks will be running a Warm Up America "learn-to-knit" workshop on Wednesday, January 20th after school from 2 - 3pm, in the library MakerSpace. Warm Up America is a nonprofit that delivers blankets to people and charities in need.

-  Hopkinton Organizing for Prevention (HOP) is sponsor a screening of The Anonymous People Film on Wednesday, January 20th from 7-9pm in the High School Auditorium. All are encouraged to attend to view a moving documentary on the stigma of addictions and how this issue requires a community response. This will be followed by a panel presentation including people representing different stakeholder groups of this issue. Here is a link to The Anonymous People trailer.

- After months of waiting, a new learning space was unveiled last month in the high school and is the focus of this new HPS Digital post. Furniture was assembled, installed, and a math classroom was reborn. One of the teachers using this new space, Jaime Hall, discusses how classroom environment changes the students' perceptions and learning.

Student Spotlight of the Week: Congrats to HHS Grad Bryan Vanderpool '05 and his band the Well Pennies on being named Billboard 2015 Album of the year by editor Gary Trust. What an amazing accomplishment!

HHS Weekly Update for Jan. 11th - Jan. 15th

Weekly Announcements:

- This Sunday, January 10th is the last day to order a Yearbook. Don't miss out! Please visit the HHS website for more details.

- On Wednesday, January 13th, District Wellness Coordinator Bruce Elliott & Dr. Karen Zaleski, Director of Student Services, have collaborated with the Middlesex Partnership for Youth to offer a presentation called,  ‘An Act Relative to Bullying & Cyberbullying.’  The presentation is free to the public.  It will take place in the HS auditorium from 7 - 8:30pm.


- The High School beFREE club is having 3-on-3 student and staff basketball tournament Thursday night, January 14th at 7pm in the Athletic Center sponsored by the HOP (Hopkinton Organizing for Prevention). The event is completely free and all HHS students are welcome to come and play and/or hang out. There will be games like KanJam and SpikeBall set up around the courts as well as pizza and snacks.


- This effort is part of the work being done by HOP, a recently established substance abuse prevention coalition. The high school is represented on this coalition by Bruce Elliott, counselors Kiely Murray & Jane Gomes, as well as students Colette Fritsche and Alex Wojcik.


- Friday, January 15th is an Early Release Day.  Here is the schedule for the day:

- Teachers will be spending the reminder of the professional development time on Friday  working within departments, or with course partners, on our continued work with formative assessments.  Click here for more information on formative assessment. 

- This HPS Digital post showcases how math teacher Lorelle Govoni took something about digital communication she learned about at MassCUE and appropriated it for her own devices, all in an attempt to make her math classes more student-centric.
