HHS Weekly Update Feb 29th - March 4th

Weekly Announcements:
Tuesday, March 1st is the annual Science Fair at the high school.  Students participating in the Science and Engineering Fair have chosen their own independent research projects, such as developing an app to kill bacteria with sunlight. Students from all grades began the process back in September (some even began earlier, in the summer) by choosing a topic or area to investigate. The students have worked with teacher mentors at the high school to refine their project ideas and began experiments in December. The high school school fair is just before the regional fair which takes place in March, and the state level fair is held in May.  Awards at the high school level are provided generously by our Hopkinton Parent Teacher Association, totaling $200 in cash awards. All are welcome to come see the amazing projects in the library on Tuesday!

The High School library will be hosting a movie night on Thursday at 6:30pm. We will be showing the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Hunger Games in the library and seminar room (one movie in each location).  All are welcomed to attend.

Ann Power is an initiative to provide leadership training to girls, empowering them to become the next generation of global trailblazers.  Female students in the 10th or 11th grades are eligible to apply.  If interested, please click on the link below for additional information http://annpower.vitalvoices.org/

Attention all community members, please take a moment to nominate a former Hiller for the Top of the Hill program. The program will annually honor alumns from Hopkinton High School who have reached the pinnacle of their chosen professions or have contributed to their communities. Former students will be invited back to the school to interact with current students in an effort to inspire students to what they could become or aspire to be. The HHS Library now has a Makey Makey kit available for use in the makerspace! All are encouraged to check it out, and try using it to do some of their own Scratch programming! Want to learn more? See some of the online resources posted here.

Wellness Tip of the Week:  K2/Spice- back on the rise. Recently Massachusetts has seen an increase in the use of K2/Spice among adolescents. Some have serious reactions to these substances leading to severe paranoia, delusions and hallucinations. Massachusetts has made it illegal to purchase this product in convenience stores, smoke shops, and other outlets. However, these products can be bought through online businesses and may be a reason for seeing this issue arising. Please click on the following links to find out more on these products as packaging targets adolescents in many cases.  Additional Link: K2/Spice - Drugfree.org
